If you’re relocating to the Bennington VT area, or maybe moving from an in-town location to something a little more rural, you may not be familiar with the care required of your septic system.
It’s important to know how your system works and even more important you need to know how to maintain your system.
Proper maintenance of your system will protect the investment you’ve made in your real estate. You should inspect your system periodically (about every 3 years) and pump out the solids in the tank on a regular basis (generally every 3 to 5 years). How often the pumping out needs to be done depends on the size of your tank and how many people are in your house using the system.
If properly designed, constructed and maintained, your septic system will provide long-term, effective treatment of household wastewater. A system that is not properly maintained might need to be replaced, costing thousands of dollars. A system that fails can contaminate groundwater that could get into your drinking water if you have a well. When selling your home, Buyers will usually ask about the condition and maintenance schedule of your septic system. It’s a good idea to keep records of all maintenance done on your system so you can show your new Buyer that you’ve been diligent about maintaining your system.
In future entries, I’ll discuss in more detail how a septic system works, how to properly maintain your system and why maintenance is so important.
